The Return Of White Appliances

When we redid our kitchen upgrade last year, I refused to replace our old appliances with stainless steel ones. Granted yes, stainless steel appliances have been gracing our American kitchens for the last seventeen years but that doesn’t mean I like them. First off, they are hard to keep clean as they show every single smudge as your day progresses. And second, I really don’t want what every other single person on the planet wants. I like to be different. Granted yes again, for resale value, stainless steel appliances would have helped but I have no intention of selling. I chose white appliances for me. I like white appliances. They look neat. They’re easy to keep clean and, most importantly, they’re priced sometimes 75% less than those stupid stainless steel appliances, which are basically the very same thing!

I’m happy to state that white appliances are finally making a comeback. The sales person at the Appliance Store told me they would (as he could see my distress over stainless steel vs white). And now, interior designers are finally touting the joys of decorating kitchens once again with white appliances (as well as black). After seventeen long years of only stainless steel appliances (how boring!) the beauty of white appliances are finally making a comeback (wouldn’t it be hilarious if Harvest Gold came back also?)

My favorite interior design website is ‘Little Black Domicile‘. Yesterday they posted an entry dedicated to the return of white (and black) appliances (click here).

We hate to say “we told you so”…but we did in this past post , quite a long time ago.  There are other, more design savvy choices than stainless steel for our appliances.  Appliance manufacturers are finally listening to designers and offering better selections of black and white appliances. Sure all the high-end, glossy white with mixed metal accents, appliances grab us at hello. However, not only are these babies expensive, they also often come in sizes larger than standard openings. But we don’t always need a major renovation to work these bright beauties into our decor.

Or you can go fancy white (if you have the funds)

As with anything trendy, prices now on white appliances are starting to rise. Thankfully, I got into this new upcoming trend last year when everyone shrugged their shoulders at me because I chose white for our new kitchen appliance upgrade. I literally saved hundreds of dollars by going white for our fridge, stove and dishwasher. The white models were exactly the same as their stainless steel counterparts.

The only difference was the price. Lucky me!

This is my kitchen. A re-paint of the cabinets is the only thing left for me to do.

  1. LOVE IT! I’m so happy to hear I waited long enough to be “IN” again…we have white appliances too, and now all I need to do is repaint, and put on new cupboard hinges, and…wait…the counters are outdated…is laminate coming back into style??

    • Quartz is now in for countertops. Granite is out. Have no idea about laminate. Except the new laminate flooring is fantastic. Ahhhh technology. Love it!

  2. I had harvest gold in my first home in 1978 all the rage and it was the sample home of the development. I have always preferred white and have the same appliances that you have in your kitchen. My first apartment had a stainless steel sink and I learned how hard it was to keep sparkling. My kids have the stainless and they can’t keep up with the smudges- no thanks. Sincerely, Lara

    • Hi Lara, I don’t know how or why we women put up with the daily cleaning of all those stainless steel appliances? What a lot of work! I wipe down my white appliances with either vinegar or windex and they shine, shine, shine! Easy. Peasy.
      Thanks for your comment.

  3. Love, love the white. Glad to see their return. It lightens the kitchen and makes it a place to be. Never did the stainless—my brother did and I saw the work! Not for me.I bought this house with poorly painted cabinets. Every summer I think, maybe I will repaint them…..

  4. We’ll be updating our kitchen, too. Thankfully we went with black appliances a few years ago. Husband will remove & put up new backsplash, we’ll do new countertops/sink/hardware & some new lighting & call it an update! You can do so much yourself to increase the value of your home! Thank goodness my hubby is a handyman! He does it all!

    • Hi Sue. My hubby does a lot too. We already have the new appliances, countertop, sink faucet, microwave and range hood. The only thing left is our cabinets really need to be painted a more modern color. Right now they are natural maple but they really are dated. The wood quality however, is excellent, so they will stay! YAY!
Lucky you, you have black appliances. I think black is more in than white BTW!
Enjoy your remodeling and take your time. When you do it that way, it can be fun. ENJOY!

  5. I think your wood cabinets look beautiful. I love the warmth of wood. We have wood with mostly bisque appliances, which I love. But when we replaced the dishwasher we went with white and will replace the other appliances with white when the time comes.

    • Thanks Karen. The wood is maple and it goes with everything. I was going to paint over them this spring but I have changed my mind. Natural wood in the kitchen, is back in style it seems. Thank goodness! White and natural wood. i think I’ll keep them! LOL.
      Thank you for your comment.
