Why I Stopped Listening To The News And Listen To Music Instead

There’s a lot of hatred going on in this country. Without mentioning names, it has gotten to the point that I can not tolerate television anymore. I’ve stopped watching late night and any and all talk shows. I just cancelled my cable/satellite account because I couldn’t stand to watch FOX News, FOX Business, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN and even the Bloomberg financial reports. All the newscasters, seem to me, to just be screaming havoc and chaos.

Even my local news broadcasting, CBS Evening News is undergoing a change in direction. With the placement of Ms. Zirinsky as the new, current news director, all conservative newscasters have been fired and replaced by more liberal counterparts. I’m sad to see news anchor Jeff Glor replaced by a well known,  president hater and despiser, Norah O’Donnell (click here). At least Jeff Glor stuck to a script and kept his personal opinions to himself. This won’t be with Nora at the helm. The evening news at CBS will no longer be fair and balanced. It will be slanted and opinionated. No thanks.

gayle and nora
Both Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell are notorious Trump bashers. They just can’t keep their hatred of the president to themselves. No thanks. Moving on.

Last night, as I was watching an episode of a new Law And Order, the show was about several teenagers who desecrated a Jewish synagogue. The teenagers were wearing MAGA hats. How much more contrived can the writers of this TV drama be? No such thing has happened in real life, yet the show broadcasted more lies and deception to their unsuspecting audiences. In fact, what happened in real life was just the opposite. Real teenagers who were wearing MAGA hats were unjustly criticized by the media. FYI, the teenagers were Christians. Not Jewish in any way. Click here for the full story.

Needless to say, I turned off Law And Order and put it on my ever expanding Do Not See list.

Please don’t send me any comments mentioning the President’s name or how you truly feel about him. I won’t print them. I’m not interested in your hatred of the President nor the status of our preposterous media outlets and their corresponding non-essential celebrities. Let the celebrities boycott anything they want. I’m not listening. I’m turned off and tuned out.

Every single news outlet, on the face of the American planet, has undergone a steady decline of actual viewers in ALL age groups (click here and click here). Why is that? Apparently whatever they are doing isn’t working. So what has been their solution? To do whatever it is they are doing even more! Aren’t they the most brilliant people on the planet? We The People are sick of you bashing our country. We The People know that whatever it is you are spewing is a lie.

In the first quarter of this year, viewers 25-54 were down between 14% and 17% for the three major news channels: Fox News Channel lost 15% in prime time to 421,000 Nielsen measured viewers, while MSNBC was down 18% to 333,000; and CNN was off 10% to 308,000.

Younger adults are continuing to find nontraditional options for their content consumption, leaving traditional programming facing a sustained—if predictable—drop in viewership.

The average audience for the evening newscasts for ABC, CBS and NBC decreased by 7% in 2017, down to 5.2 million, compared with 5.6 million in 2016, according to comScore TV Essentials® data. (Average audience is defined as the average number of TVs tuned to a program throughout a time period.)

I’ve completely stopped watching television of any kind altogether. There’s no refuge anymore. No escapism. Almost every single thing put out there in TV La La Land has an underlying message of hatred for this country. I’m sick of it! So, I’ve started listening to music, free of charge, from Spotify. I play calming piano pieces and classical arrangements from Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. I want peace and quiet in my home and by golly, I’m going to have it!

Thankfully, Netflix has been playing old movies, such as The Bishop’s Wife and His Girl Friday (both movies starring Cary Grant). Click here to see a list of old black & white movies Netflix is currently streaming. People back then had real problems to contend with, such as World War II and McCarthyism.

Things are not as bad in this country as the pundits falsely make it seem. Why can’t we just keep our mouths shut and enjoy it? As for me, unless the news is about Social Security, Medicare and anything else remotely related to retirement, I’m not listening. And noooooooooo, none of the above programs are going to be eliminated or go belly up.

  1. How do people have time to watch hours and hours of news? I watch PBS Evening News while cleaning up the kitchen after dinner. That’s it. I know what’s going on in the world without being overwhelmed. I’m very active in corresponding with my members of Congress about issues that I care about and 1 hour once a day is enough. Anyway, there’s a whole world out there once you turn the television off.
BTW, I’m watching a series on Netflix that I think you would like. It’s The Kindness Diaries. Give it a look.

    • Hi Florence. I heard good things about The Kindness Diaries.Yes, I’ll give it a look.
It’s my husband who is engrossed in the news. But I could see he was getting very agitated so I just pout an end to it. I read the news off of my computer every day. It’s easier to read the news than listen to people’s intentions.
The morning news used to be enjoyable as it tended to give words of wisdom and post interesting stories about interesting people. Not so much anymore.
I like PBS News. I also like the BBC news. I do watch NBR every day. They’re very good and easy to understand. They just give the business facts and that’s all I want or need.
Thanks for your comment. I’m going to try out that netflix recommendation. Thanks again.

  2. Ditto. Loved His Girl Friday, it was funny and well written. I listen to talk radio for the most part. I agree with the fact that the news/facts is/are not being reported and there is more and more opinion. Gone are the days when one couldn’t tell what the anchor or correspondent’s politics were, now it is their opinions and if one doesn’t agree ……..
Music is one of outlets, thanks Cindi

    • Hi Janet. Where is Walter Cronkite when you need him? Sometimes I listen to talk radio. But music is so much better. Tranquil and peaceful. Puts me in ‘the zone’.
Thanks for reading my blog and for your comment.

  3. Music, PBS, HgTv, and Hallmark and Ovation runs some of the British drama like Midsummer Murders. Amazon Prime and Netflix all works for me. The happiest people I know don’t watch any TV news. They are selective on what programs they see.

    • Lara, Nick and I have been so much more happier PLUS productive with our chores around the house since I dumped the cable news shows. No more screaming, yelling, banging on the tables…….the news really has no purpose in our lives anymore. It has no effect on our current lives. I’m glad over the China tariffs. The Chinese have been stealing from America for decades. Remember the babies who died because of poisons in Chinese baby formula? Or the dogs and cats who died from animal feeds produced by the Chinese? The faulty steel, failing auto parts, the defective products? PBS had a fantastic special on last week explaining our trade deals with China. Eye opening for sure! Our American companies can only open up shop in China if we divulge all our trademark secrets. WTF? And the stupid American companies comply because they want to make money, money money….while selling all of us down the river. No thanks.
The tariffs are good IMHO. If we buy American, as what will soon happen, it’ll be a very good thing for us. I’d rather pay more for an American made product because I know it’ll be made safe, secure and productive. Americans are very good workers and very fine producers. IMHO.

  4. High five. I do like to watch Fox and local news but our local news is so biased that I can only stomach the weather forecast these days. My PC reads his news online and doesn’t want to see a single minute of news when he gets home from work. In so very many ways, this is a troubled world we live in.

    • Oh my goodness, Sally. You are truly blessed. Aren’t the songs of the birds pure melody? I can listen to them chatter for hours.
Thanks for reading my blog and for your comments.
