Last night, for the first time, I watched this commercial from Country Crock introducing a brand new, plant-based butter (click here), that came in a few flavors (olive oil, avocado oil, almond oil). Ever since the introduction of the plant-based impossible burger, it seems all the other food manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon. It didn’t take me long to realize that the food industry has developed yet another way to part you and your hard earned money by buying yet another ridiculous, man-made food invention, as per the latest food fad.
While all of this sounds inviting and healthy, do YOU really need a plant-based butter? Are you really going to save the planet by eating more plant-based products? You do realize that these new products are man made, in a factory that probably will pollute the environment faster than hand churned butter! Isn’t our existing margarine (canola, soy etc) already plant-based? These new choices sound inviting and tasty but it’s just another fad the food industry has hopped on, inventing new flavors and textures, simply to sell us more products.
Country Crock Plant–Butter with Olive Oil is made of a “blend of plant–based oils (palm kernel, canola, palm fruit, and olive oil), water, salt, pea protein, sunflower lecithin, monoglycerides, citric acid, natural flavor, vitamin A palmitate, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect freshness), beta carotene (color).”
The Country Crock products come with a higher price tag. Granted, it’s wise to limit our butter intake (please don’t tell the French!) but its not necessary to run out and buy yet another high priced product on yet another passing food fad. Country crock is straight up chemicals. I use plain ole Parkay margarine in all my baking as a means of saving money or whenever I want to limit my butter intake. It only costs .85 cents for 4 sticks at Aldi. That’s right, only eighty five cents! Parkay is already made from plant-based oils. Parkay was invented during the last World War as a means of being a great substitute for butter, which was in short supply during the war. In other words, Parkay is a tried and true American standard product.
Margarine usually tops butter when it comes to heart health. Margarine is made from vegetable oils, so it contains unsaturated “good” fats — polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. These types of fats help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol when substituted for saturated fat. Parkay Margarine contains: Vegetable Oil Blend (Liquid Soybean Oil, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil), Water, Salt, Contains Less than 2% of the Following: Dried Whey, Vegetable Mono- and Diglycerides and Soy Lecithin (Emulsifiers), Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Benzoate (to Preserve Freshness), Natural and Artificial Flavor, Phosphoric Acid (Acidulant), Vitamin A Palmitate, Colored with Beta Carotene (Source of Vitamin A), Flaxseed Oil.
I know we all want to save the planet but I also want to save my wallet. I suspect we are going to see a lot of food manufacturers (call them what they are……..food manufacturers, their products are NOT real) come out with a plethora of plant-based food products. Buyer beware. We’ve already discovered that the new impossible burger is similar to highly processed dog food (click here). I wouldn’t consider humans eating dog food a step in the right direction. We need to eat normal, fresh, real grown foods!
We’ve already learned from the proven KETO diet that fat is good. Remember when we were taught fat was bad? And to avoid it like the plague? Then a bunch of low fat products came out, the masses rushed to buy and eat the crap only to find out fats were important for both our body, our brains and our souls! Now, today, you can actually buy fat bars just brimming with delicious fats. Go figure!
The American Heart Association says this about fats: Dietary fats are essential to give your body energy and to support cell growth. They also help protect your organs and help keep your body warm. Fats help your body absorb some nutrients and produce important hormones, too. Your body definitely needs fat.
I follow The Mediterranean Diet (click here). Endorsed by the Mayo Clinic, the Mediterranean Diet has, by far, proven to be the best diet for humans to follow. It guarantees a longer, happier, healthier life. Real fresh food choices for a real, fresh lifestyle. When I do use butter, I prefer using the butter and olive oil combo (with a touch of natural sea salt). These three ingredients, when combined make a fantastic choice (IMHO) to satiate my desire for butter on my toast, in a sandwich or on top of pancakes or Sunday morning French toast.
Butter with olive oil is said to have 0 trans fat, 45 percent less saturated fat, and 50 percent less cholesterol than regular butter. So it’s a healthier alternative to butter.
I’m not a nutritionist so I really can’t advise you on what products to buy. I can only state what I do, eat and buy. I can tell you, however, to do your homework, think about food shams and most of all think about your bottom line: your grocery bill. Don’t waste your money on the next food fads.
